The Jackal is an elusive assassin who makes a living by carrying out high-paying hits. In The Day of the Jackal (1973), the Jackal also drives a white Alfa Romeo, albeit an older model. Graham Norton Show reference: Denzel Washington/Paul Mescal/Saoirse Ronan/Eddie Redmayne/Blossoms (2024). TLDR: Redmayne nails it. Lynch is poorly cast. Unfortunately, the leads aren’t up to par, which detracts from the otherwise spectacular and high-quality production. Lynch is not being overshadowed by anything, it’s just the high bar set by Redmayne. A more experienced actor might have provided a more believable antagonist/opponent figure needed to challenge the Jackal. Overall, the story is a viable adaptation. The character development works, although some things are left open in the main characters’ stories, but that could be desired. The locations, the varied interactions, and Redmaynes’ use of languages and character shifts really add a layer of their own to the story. There’s a constant barometer of deception in the background. I’m looking forward to seeing how Se01 ends and how the quality is maintained or improved in Se02. Hopefully Lynch will tone down, be less forced, and give a more nuanced performance to try to match Redmayne. If he does, Se02 could be quite promising.
