A Montana ranching family confronts others who are invading their land. Forrie J. Smith, who plays Lloyd, is a rodeo expert. John Dutton (Kevin Costner) often seems to “forget” his Montana accent and reverts to his normal Southern California speaking voice. Featured in WatchMojo: Top 10 Summer TV Shows That Aren’t On Your Radar (2018) Kevin Costner is a patriarch who runs a dynastic ranch the size of several countries. His way of life is being violated by resort developers, tribal rights, and Montana state officials. He remembers Rock Hudson in the movie “Giant”, he tries to stick to the old ways. “Yellowstone” opens quickly with a few introductions, but still its story progresses in the natural rhythm of a day spent in the wilderness, with breaks for tribal rituals, cowboy meetings and political intrigue. It is a far-reaching project that focuses on the seams of law and justice, family and friendships. Costner seems to fill his character’s boots naturally. He is a world-weary man who has seen too much and lied too often. Country and family are his livelihood. He hears footsteps approaching him, but he can only fulfill his role out of habit and loyalty. Although some of the actions are a little confusing due to the inexplicability, they feel natural, as if the viewer gets a genuine glimpse of life in another world. I hope that the resolution of this saga contains an emotional triumph that justifies its scope and attention to detail. Update 7/20/2018: After four episodes, this series has a strong voice and a steady pace. We learn the fullness of each story, from roots to fruits. I will raise my rating to “9”.
